Creating the Show Reel

Process

We looked at this footage from Stefan K which is a show reel of work he created in 30 days using a second of motion animation every day. This inspired me to create my own, I loved the clean and professional style and how the transitions work in time with the music to a high standard.

We collected a piece of audio which we felt complimented the pieces of work we had created which we would include in our show reel. I chose to pick a happier track with a reoccurring beat to help me map when to transition from one piece of work to another. We pressed the Asterix key every time we felt there was a definite beat and this is what we produced.

Once we had edited our audio and was happy with it we opened Illustrator and started to create opening and closing title pages which gave a name to the show reel we were about to create. I chose to create a simplistic and minimal design as I feel this best reflected my work as well as not overpowering the work that would be going into my show reel. I used a Geomanist type face using combinations of Bold and Regular as a nice composition to make the type look a lot more interesting.

I continued to work on the project by importing my different footage and compositions, I stacked these and trimmed them depending on the length and what I wanted from each clip. I tried to time the transition of the compositions to the audio and I feel that this has worked well overall and it makes my piece look interesting and professional. I also used the stretch tool at points to speed up and slow down my footage by fractions to make it easier to fit more of my footage into a smaller space.

I was happy with my final show reel, I feel that the audio compliments the style and rhythm of my work and personal style choices. I think that this explains what I have done over the course of this year well in a single edited video. I am at a point where I am happy to show this to potential clients and employers to give them an idea of the standard of work I am creating and who I am.
